Geodesy and Geoinformatics are scientific fields concerned with the study and mapping of the Earth, including the determination and analysis of the shape, dimensions, and other characteristics of the Earth’s surface. Let us consider each field separately.
Geodesy is a scientific discipline concerned with measuring and representing the Earth, its shape, dimensions, and gravitational field in three-dimensional and time-dependent space. The main tasks of geodesy include:
Determining the shape and dimensions of the Earth: This includes determining the geoid shape of the Earth, ellipsoidal models, and elevations at different points on the Earth’s surface.
Establishing and maintaining geodetic coordinate systems: These systems are necessary to ensure the accurate positioning of points on the Earth’s surface.
Studying the gravitational field: Information about the Earth’s gravitational field helps researchers understand its internal structure, water resources, and other geophysical processes.
Measuring directions and distances: This process involves the use of high-precision surveying instruments and modern technologies.
Geoinformatics is a field that applies information technologies to the collection, storage, analysis, and visualization of geographic data.
