Metallurgical Engineering

Bachelor’s program “Metallurgical Engineering” is focused on the study of processes for extracting, processing, and improving metals and alloys, including both base and precious metals such as gold, silver, platinum, palladium, and rhodium. Students learn how metals are obtained from ores, refined, melted, and transformed into materials with required properties. The program is closely connected to industries such as construction, mechanical engineering, energy, electronics, and advanced high-tech manufacturing. A strong emphasis is placed on the chemistry and physics of metals, industrial equipment operation, process automation, and product quality control.

A special focus is given to gold and other precious metals, which are valued for their high chemical stability, electrical conductivity, and rarity. Gold does not oxidize easily, which is why it is widely used not only in jewelry but also in electronics, medicine, and precision instruments. Metallurgical engineers study methods of gold extraction from ores (such as cyanidation and flotation), refining it to high purity (affination), and recycling electronic waste. Platinum group metals are widely used in catalysts and the chemical industry, but their extraction is difficult because they occur in very low concentrations in nature. Therefore, specialists develop more efficient and environmentally friendly technologies for extraction and processing, combining engineering knowledge with economics and environmental considerations.
