GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT SAMARKAND STATE MEDICAL UNIVERSITY

(AS OF 2026)

Samarkand State Medical University is one of the oldest and most prestigious higher medical education institutions in the Republic of Uzbekistan and Central Asia. The history of the University dates back to May 7, 1930, when the Uzbek State Medical Institute was established in Samarkand in accordance with Resolution No. 80 of the Council of People's Commissars of the Uzbek SSR.

Over nearly a century of activity, the University has trained more than 40,000 highly qualified physicians and healthcare professionals. Today, Samarkand State Medical University occupies a leading position among the medical universities of Uzbekistan and the Central Asian region.

Following the independence of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the University entered a new stage of development. Within the framework of the National Program for Personnel Training and the State Program for Healthcare Reform, new faculties and academic programs were established. In 1999, the Faculty of Higher Nursing Education was founded, while in subsequent years dentistry, pharmacy, preventive medicine, medical biology, and other educational programs were further developed.

Since 2013, the University has operated its own electronic learning platform. During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the University successfully organized distance learning, ensuring uninterrupted educational activities and providing students and faculty members with access to digital educational resources.

Samarkand State Medical University actively develops international cooperation with leading educational and scientific institutions worldwide. The University maintains partnerships with a number of higher education institutions in Russia, Belarus, Poland, the Republic of Korea, and other countries. Particular attention is paid to academic mobility programs, joint educational projects, and the training of international students.

On December 24, 2021, the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan signed important documents aimed at expanding the academic, organizational, and financial autonomy of state higher educational institutions. These decisions created new opportunities for improving educational activities, scientific research, and university governance.

In accordance with the Presidential Decree of the Republic of Uzbekistan dated April 1, 2022, Samarkand State Medical University was established on the basis of the Samarkand State Medical Institute. This decision marked an important stage in the modernization of medical education and further enhancement of healthcare workforce training in accordance with international standards.

During 2025–2026, the academic and organizational autonomy of the University was significantly expanded. The University obtained additional opportunities to improve educational programs, introduce new fields of study in line with labor market demands, strengthen internal quality assurance systems, and develop modern educational and scientific resources.

During 2024–2026, large-scale initiatives were implemented to advance education, science, and innovation. Mechanisms for translating research outcomes into healthcare practice were improved, access to international scientific databases and electronic educational resources was expanded, and extensive digitization of library collections and educational processes was carried out. The material and technical infrastructure of the University was substantially strengthened through the modernization of classrooms, laboratories, and research facilities.

Special attention is given to the integration of education, science, and practical healthcare. In accordance with national development programs, the University continues to expand its clinical facilities, research centers, and specialized medical units, thereby contributing to the improvement of medical education quality and scientific capacity.

As of 2026, the University enrolls 14,453 students, including 4,155 international students. The educational process is supported by 1,256 faculty members, including 41 professors and 95 Doctors of Science. The University is recognized as an attractive destination for medical education among students from India, Pakistan, China, Germany, Russia, the Republic of Korea, Türkiye, Nepal, Bangladesh, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, and many other countries.

By Order No. 249-AF of the Rector of Samarkand State Medical University dated May 25, 2023, and in accordance with the Regulation approved by the Resolution No. 421 of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan dated July 6, 2021, “On Approval of the Regulation on the Organization of Educational Activities Based on Joint Educational Programs of Higher Education Institutions of the Republic of Uzbekistan and Foreign Partner Higher Education Institutions,” the Joint Education Faculty was established on the basis of the Department for the Organization of Joint Educational Programs.

The Joint Education Faculty is the youngest faculty of the university and the only faculty operating exclusively on the basis of joint educational programs. Connecting Uzbekistan with South and Central Asia as well as Eastern Europe, the faculty offers students a unique opportunity to study at one of the leading higher education institutions in the region.

The Faculty of Medicine began its activities in 1930, when Samarkand State Medical University was founded, and was the only faculty of the university until 1963.

The main departments of the faculty were founded in 1930-1935. In connection with the granting of the status of a higher educational institution of the second category to the university in 1947, and of the first category in 1965, new departments and courses were established. Accordingly, each department has a rich history and invaluable experience in training qualified specialists.

Among the talented students of the faculty, 2 were awarded the Scholarship of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, 6 were awarded the Ibn Sino State Scholarship, 2 were awarded the I. Karimov State Scholarship, 4 were awarded the Scholarship of the Association of Physicians of the Republic of Uzbekistan, and 3 were awarded the Scholarship of the Trade Union of the Republic of Uzbekistan. In addition, more than 50 of the talented students of the faculty became winners of prestigious International and Republican competitions and science Olympiads. 

2395 students study at the faculty. Education is conducted in Uzbek, Russian and English, in accordance with the requirements of the qualification description of a doctor of medicine (attending physician) in the specialty 5510100-"medical work".

In organizing the educational process, decisive importance is attached to strict adherence to academic and labor discipline, the widespread introduction of advanced pedagogical technologies into teaching practice, and improving the quality and efficiency of teaching at the departments of the faculty. 

Regular material incentives, monetary awards for professors and students, admission of students to prestigious state scholarships, as well as scholarships of the Association of Physicians of Uzbekistan can be found in the team.

The faculty is trying to study the life of each student in carrying out this difficult, daily work, provide the necessary assistance, and meet with the parents of students. Rationalization of the work of the dean's offices, introduction of the positions of deputy deans for each course, assignment of one deputy dean to the 1st to 6th courses, ensuring that the total number of students at the faculty for each semester is not less than 99.6 - 99.8%, the high-quality mastery rate in subjects is 80 - 90%, and improvement continues. 

Scientific work carried out by the faculty's scientists is always inextricably linked with the requirements of scientific and pedagogical personnel training and practical health care. 

It is worth noting that the faculty's scientists participate in grant applications competitions to carry out their scientific research.

Great attention is paid to working with gifted students, in 2020 more than 100 students were admitted to the group of gifted students; they actively participated in the work of student scientific circles, represented the university at republican olympiads, gave lectures at university, republican and international scientific conferences, were awarded with publications, medals and diplomas. 

Some of them have identified topics for future master's and doctoral dissertations, serious research work has begun.

Spiritual and educational work at the faculty is aimed at instilling in students universal cultural values, centuries-old traditions and rich heritage of our people, promoting in them the special path of forming a sovereign Uzbekistan and its inclusion in the ranks of developed countries, as outlined in the works of the first President of our Republic, I. A. Karimov, and the formation of high spiritual and moral qualities based on fostering a sense of patriotism and pride for our Motherland.

      Faculty of Pediatrics of Samarkand State Medical University was established in 1963. The first dean of the faculty is associate professor N.M. Kamalov. In the early years of the organization, students of the pediatric faculty studied in the departments of the medical faculty. Later, independent departments of pediatrics were established in the training program of pediatric specialists. In 1966, the Department of Propaedeutics of Children's Diseases, in 1967, the Department of Pediatrics, in 1968, the Department of Hospital Pediatrics, in 1970, the Department of Pediatric Surgery, in 1972, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, in 1974, it was transformed into a department, in 1973, the department of therapy of the department of pediatrics was established. In 1985, the Department of Hospital Pediatric Surgery with the course of anesthesiology and Resuscitation was established, and later the departments of Neonatology and Emergency Pediatrics were established.

  Over the past period, the faculty has trained 12,000 pediatricians who work selflessly to protect the health of the young generation not only in Uzbekistan but also in many other countries. Among the graduates of the faculty, there are many health organizers: heads of regional health departments, deputy heads, chief doctors of regional and city medical centers, and medical associations. More than 50 graduates defend their doctorate theses and work in various higher educational institutions and research universities and institutes.  

  Currently, the faculty has 16 departments. These are Departments of  pediatrics No.1 and neonatology,  pediatrics No.2,  pediatrics No.3 and medical genetics, pediatric surgery No. 1, pediatric surgery No. 2, Department of neurology,  neurosurgery, ophthalmology,  obstetrics and gynecology No.2, traumatology and orthopedics, Department of radiological diagnostics and therapy, Propaedeutics of pediatric diseases, surgical diseases, Department of clinical and laboratory diagnostics, Internal Diseases of Faculty of Pediatrics, Department of infectious diseases and epidemiology.   Today, 2081 students study at the faculty. Education is conducted in Uzbek, Russian, and English languages, by the requirements of the qualifications of a general pediatrician in the direction of 5510200 - "pediatric work".

  To support educated and aspiring young people among students, competitions are held annually for the Rector's scholarship and other famous scholarships introduced by the university.

  Currently, A.R.Ergashev is the deputy dean for working with youth at the faculty; Deputy Deans for Academic Affairs: M.N.Nuritdinov, M.M.Yusupov, T.Sh.Shokirov, G.A.Yakubov, and O.S.Nurmatov have been constantly monitoring the students' daily lives, teaching processes, and activities in university life and giving necessary advice.   The scientific work carried out by the scientists of the faculty is always inextricably linked with the training of scientific and pedagogical personnel and the requirements of practical health care.

  It should be noted that scientists of the faculty participate in contests for grant orders to carry out their scientific research. The teams of departments of children's surgery, neurosurgery, and surgical diseases are examples of others.

  According to the results of research completed in 2022-2023, 4 doctorate and 15 PhD theses were defended, 826 scientific works were published, in particular, 331 in republican journals, 269 abroad, 41 monographs, and 42 academic papers. manuals, 108 teaching-methodical recommendations, 18 articles in Scopus and WoS magazines, and 17 textbooks have been developed.

  Great attention is paid to working with gifted students, 2023 more than 150 students were accepted into the group of gifted students; they actively participated in the work of student scientific circles, represented the university at republican Olympiads, gave lectures at university, republican and international scientific conferences, were awarded publications, medals and diplomas.

  During the opening of the faculty, the head of the dentistry course, Doctor of Medical Sciences Kubaev Saidolim Esirgapovich was appointed to the position of dean.

  During 2012-2020, candidate of medical sciences Zayniyev Sukhrob Sobirovich worked as a dean.

  As of 2020, Associate Professor Akhmedov Alisher Astanovich, candidate of medical sciences, was appointed as the dean of the faculty.

  Construction of new children's sports facilities, children's music and art schools, reconstruction of existing ones in order to engage children in mass sports, to attract them to the world of music and art;

  Improvement of training and employment of students of vocational colleges in specialties that meet the needs of the market economy and employers;  

  To increase the quality and efficiency of the activities of higher education institutions based on the introduction of international standards for the assessment of the quality of education and training, to gradually increase the admission quotas to higher education institutions;

  Stimulates research and innovation activities, creates effective mechanisms for implementing scientific and innovation achievements, organizes specialized scientific and experimental laboratories, high technology centers and technology parks at universities and research institutes.

The Faculty of Medical Pedagogy, Family Nursing and Folk Medicine of Samarkand State Medical University was opened in 2005 at the initiative of the rector of the institute A.M. Shamsiev. Such faculties were established in the republic in accordance with the decision of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan No. 343 dated August 16, 2001, to train general practitioners, as well as doctors-teachers for medical colleges and institutes. In 2005, 50 students were admitted to the 1st course, and their studies began on September 1. It should be noted that in 2012, the faculty consisted of 50 medical graduates, 4 of whom were awarded with an honorary diploma. Since the establishment of the faculty, a lot of work has been done to improve the quality of education, new methods of practical training are being adopted. In the sammi.moodle.uz e-learning system, all the necessary materials for mastering subjects have been created, and a bank of tests, pictorial and situational problem tests have been created to monitor student learning and knowledge.

  The departments of the faculty have 5 educational and clinical bases, 6 lecture halls, more than 30 classrooms. Also, hospitals, clinics, computer and classrooms where the educational process takes place are equipped with modern educational furniture, computers, and multimedia projectors. Departments are equipped with phantom classes that develop practical skills. Computers in all departments are connected to the Internet for educational and scientific work.

  Today, the number of students studying at the faculty from 1 to 6 courses is 622. More than 100 students are admitted to the faculty every year. The form and methods of the educational process are regularly updated and improved. In order to integrate the education of Uzbekistan with the European educational area, they have been studying at the faculty for 6 years according to the credit-module system in accordance with the Bologna educational process. For this purpose, in the pedagogical process, more importance is attached to methods such as independent preparation of students, solving test problems, mastering practical skills. The rating system allows for more creative use of teaching and supervision methods, taking into account the individual readiness of students.

  A lot of attention is also paid to the students' scientific research work. Materials on the results of scientific research are reported at the scientific councils of the faculty, at conferences, and the works are published in scientific collections. Candidate scholarships are awarded based on the results of scientific research. Admission to master's degree and residency is conducted on a competitive basis.

  The best students are awarded with the scholarship of the President of Uzbekistan, state scholarship named after Ibn Sina and other candidate scholarships.

  At the faculty, students undergo production practice in the following directions: junior nurse, nursing, hospital doctor's assistant, professional pedagogy and psychology

  The faculty's coaching institute is also functioning effectively. In order to improve educational work among students, academic groups of students have been appointed mentors from professors of the institute. In modern society, despite the acceleration of physical maturity in the spheres of life, social and psychological concepts based on self-affirmation, the need for communication, the adolescent's desire to grow up, lead to the formation of a new outlook.

  Special attention is paid to the preparation of graduate courses for state certification. During the last years, graduating students take practical graduation exams, accordingly, faculty and staff of graduate departments carry out large-scale organizational and methodical work.

  Lectures and ongoing clinical conferences with the participation of professors from leading universities and scientific research institutes of the republic, MDX and foreign countries will help to provide students with high pedagogical skills.

  The following deans contributed to the formation and development of the faculty: Professor Shavazi Nurali Mamedovich (2005-2007), Associate Professor of the Department of Forensic Medicine and Pathological Anatomy Abdullaev Bakhtiyor Saidovich (2007-2012), Associate Professor of the Department of Surgery Ruzibaev Sanjar Abdusalomovich (2012-2017). , doctor of medical sciences, associate professor Oripov Firdavs Sur'atovich (2018-2020 year), doctor of medical sciences Mamaradjabov Sobirjon Ergashevich (2020-2022 years) since April 2022, the faculty is headed by candidate of medical sciences Daminov Feruz Asadullaevich. The Department of Pharmacy was established in 2018 as part of the Faculty of Pediatrics. Later, by the order of the rector of Samarkand State Medical Institute J.A. Rizaye dated July 3, 2020 No 543 / AF, the Faculty of Pharmacy was established and the dean of the faculty was appointed Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor, N.M. Shavazi. The faculty has 5 departments (pharmacology, clinical pharmacology, pharmacognosy and pharmaceutical technology, biological chemistry and medical chemistry).

  Of the 51 professors and teachers working at the faculty, 11 (23.4%) have academic degrees, including 3 doctors of sciences (5.8%), 9 candidates of sciences (19.1%).

  As of September 2021, 586 students are studying at the faculty, of which 469 are on a contract basis. Language of instruction: Uzbek, Russian and English, 5510500 - "Pharmacy" in accordance with the qualification requirements of pharmacy.

  In the organization of the educational process, special attention is paid to strict adherence to teaching and labor discipline, the widespread introduction of advanced pedagogical technologies in teaching practice, improving the quality and effectiveness of teaching in the departments of the faculty.

  Deputy Deans G.G. Ganiyev and B.A. The Djurayevs are trying to study the life of each student, to provide the necessary assistance, to meet with the parents of students in the implementation of this difficult, daily work.

  Rationalization of the work of the dean's office, the introduction of the position of deputy deans in each direction, the attendance of faculty students for each semester is at least 99.5 - 99.7%, high-quality mastering of disciplines. The rate is 75-80% and continues to improve.

  Great attention is paid to working with gifted students, in 2021 more than 75 students were admitted to the ranks of gifted students, who are actively involved in the work of student scientific circles, participating in national Olympiads, institutes and national scientific conferences and awarded diplomas.

Faculty of Postgraduate Education of Samarkand State Medical University By order of the Minister of Health of the Republic of Uzbekistan dated September 29, 1980, a faculty for advanced training and retraining of doctors was established as part of the Samarkand State Medical Institute. The first dean of the faculty was Priev Israel Gavrilovich. Then the department was headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor A.M. Aslanov (1983-1992) From 1992 to 1995, candidate of medical sciences, associate professor A.A. Davidyan was active until 2007. In 1995 - 2008, head of the neonatology course of the FPC, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor K.R. Dilmuradova worked as the dean of the faculty. In 2008, Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor L.R. Aghababyan, who worked until 2011. From 2011 to 2015, the department was headed by Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor A.K.Shakhriev.

  According to the order of the rector of the Samarkand State Medical Institute No. 326-y dated March 23, 2017, further improvement of the medical personnel training system, constant updating of their professional knowledge and practical skills in working with modern medical equipment and information technologies, local and in order to effectively use the latest achievements in the field of world medicine, using the human resources and material and technical base of the Samarkand State Medical Institute, in order to expand the possibilities for training and retraining of practical healthcare specialists, the departments of faculties and the qualification of teachers of medical colleges were reorganized, the faculty for advanced training and retraining was included in the faculty for the improvement of doctors, and the name of the faculty improvement of doctors changed to the faculty of postgraduate education.
