A Visit to Margilan: Exploring National Crafts and Cultural Heritage
For the participants of the “GLOBAL ART & CERAMICS SUMMER CAMP – 2026” international summer camp, another meaningful excursion was organized to provide them with an opportunity to explore Uzbekistan’s rich historical and cultural heritage, national handicrafts, and artistic traditions firsthand. The camp participants visited the city of Margilan, renowned for its ancient craft traditions, unique cultural atmosphere, and the weaving of atlas and adras fabrics.
During the trip, the participants had the opportunity to gain a closer understanding of both the historical and modern character of the city of Margilan. In particular, they visited the “Burhaniddin Marg‘inoni” Scientific, Educational and Tourism Complex, where they learned about the site’s spiritual and educational significance, historical heritage, and current tourism potential.
During the visit to the complex, the guests were provided with detailed information about Margilan’s centuries-old history, its role in the development of science and education, as well as the city’s contemporary appearance. For the participants, the visit offered an opportunity to experience the harmony between ancient history and modern development and to discover Margilan’s distinctive atmosphere.
One of the most fascinating parts of the trip was an introduction to Margilan’s national textile traditions. The participants of the international summer camp received detailed information about Margilan’s atlas and adras fabrics. They became closely acquainted with the process of creating these elegant and colorful textiles, the methods of processing silk and other natural fibers, as well as the traditional techniques of dyeing and weaving.
The unique patterns of atlas and adras fabrics, the harmony of their colors, and the traditional methods used in their creation generated great interest among the international guests. It was particularly emphasized that these craft traditions, passed down from generation to generation for centuries, continue to retain their artistic and practical significance today.
