About the programme

I. The content of science

The goal of teaching science is to teach students how to design a database, creating database architecture, selecting database management systems, classifying data and creating queries on it, using DDL, DML and DCL internal languages skills and their practical application consists of creating.

The task of science is to develop theoretical and practical foundations of databases, to develop a knowledge base for data structure design, modern choosing database management systems and managing databases the practical importance of implementing automated information systems to illuminate

II. Main theoretical part (lectures)

The science includes the following topics:

Topic 1. Introduction. Purpose, functions and basic concepts of a database.

The concept of a database. Basic database
terms. Requirements for a database. Automated information
systems: an arbitrary system that processes information; the field of production of IT, depending on the field of application.

Topic 2. Database architecture and three-tier architecture.

Classification of databases. Three-tier database
architecture: external tier; conceptual tier; physical tier. Physical and logical description of M data . Components of M
database management system.

Topic 3. Database Models and Essence - Relationship Model

The concept of a data model. Hierarchical data model, Network data model. Relational data model. The essence of database design is the relationship model. The essence of a relational diagram.

Topic 4. Relational model and relationships in a database

Basic concepts of relational databases,
Using tables to represent data. Relationships in a database. Codd's
scientific work. Describing relationships using two-dimensional tables.
Relationships are used to store data sets and
model the relationships between them.

Topic 5. Elements of Relational Algebra and Relational Calculus

Operations on relations. Basic concepts of relational databases. Relational algebra and its operations. Elements of relational computation and their use.

Topic 6. Database Planning, Design, and Administration

Database life cycle organization. Database planning. Database design. Database administration. Using database interconnection file structures to organize effective access to information. Describe relational boundaries and security measures in a database.

7. Database normalization: INF, 2NF, 3NF and  Codd normal forms

Database normalization. Functional relationships and their types. First normal form and its requirements. Second normal form and its requirements. Third normal form and its requirements. Codd normal form. Dividing a given relation into several simple and sub-relations.

Topic 8. SQL writing language and SQL operators

Functions of the SQL language. Interactive and structured SQL. Data types in the SQL language and working with them. Structure and syntax of SQL language commands. The SELECT operator of the SQL language and its parameters.

9. Creating simple queries for data manipulation

Creating complex queries. Working with substitution functions in SQL. Using group functions in queries. Creating views. Working with tables. Extracting and restoring data.

1 0. Describing data using SQL

Ensuring data integrity in SQL. Creating data tables. Working with partial queries. Creating database objects. Data Definition Language (DLL) operators. CREATE TABLE command. INSERT command. Type and size for each column.

Topic 11. Procedures and standard functions in SQL

Standard and aggregate functions in SQL. Aggregate function arguments. Creating queries using standard functions. Standard functions in SQL syntax. The DISTINCT standard keyword and its use to remove duplicate rows delete. Sort rows using the ORDER BY command. Aggregates and grouping data.

Topic 12. Creating and processing queries in transaction management

The concept of transactions in the SQL environment. Managing transactions in the SQL environment. Arithmetic operations. Specifying the calculation order. Triggers and their use. Searching for a sub-row using the POSITIONQ functions. Current state. Expressing conditional values using the CASE expression.

Topic 13. Distributed data processing.

data processing. Modern distributed database architecture.

Topic 14. Distributed Database and the Internet .

Web environment database application platform. Creating a database for WEB applications. Requirements and methods for integrating distributed DB and WEB environments.

Topic 15. Database administration and security .

Database administration. Ensuring data security.

Topic 16. Using ODBC and various programs to organize access to a database .

The main components in programming are the ADOConnection and ADO Query components. The Data Source and DBGrid components. The application and Oracle connection.

Topic 17. XML and Databases .

XML view. SQL/XML functions. Data entry and presentation.

III. Laboratory exercises are not planned in this course.

IV. Practical training topics

The following topics are recommended for practical training:

  1. Installing and configuring database programs (MySql server, Oracle) Server, Microsoft SQL Server)
  2. Database design, in essence - building a relationship diagram. Designing a relational database.
  3. Create, modify, and delete tables in SQL delete.

V I. Learning outcomes:

The student should know:

-Have an idea of dividing the subject area and creating its model ;

-Methods for describing the model of the subject area;

-Know and be able to select database management systems and create databases on personal computers and use them;

VIII. Requirements for obtaining loans:

They are required to submit the tasks and assignments assigned to the system in the form of practical work, independent work, current, and intermediate control within the specified time frame. Final control work in the form of a test or written test is submitted in the above-mentioned system or, if it is planned to be submitted in another system, in that system.

Based on the established procedure, students' participation throughout the course, as well as the results of the final written work on theoretical and practical subjects, will be assessed.

The assessment is distributed as follows:

  • Lectures – 25%;.
  • Practical training – 25%;
  • Final control – 50%.

Theoretical assessment:

During the course, there will be 1 midterm exam, independent learning, and active participation in practical exercises. During midterm exams, three questions are asked and students provide written answers. During active participation in practical exercises, students are assessed based on factors such as timely completion of assigned tasks and assignments, answering questions asked by teachers, and the correct approach to the topic.
