About the university

The most prestigious and leading, with a history of over 100 years, has been making a significant contribution to the training of highly qualified medical personnel, conducting scientific research and developing the healthcare system.

Establishment of the Faculty of Medicine of Turkestan State University

In 1918, the People's Commissariat of Health was established, thereby laying the foundation for medicine in Turkestan. On March 13, 1919, a decision was made to establish the faculty. On September 17, the first dean, Professor P.P. Sitkovsky, was elected, and the deputy, K.G. Khrushchev. In 1919-1921, the material and technical base was formed, a number of departments and professors began working. In 1920, 205 students studied at the faculty. In 1921, the first 12 students graduated, and in 1922, 27 students graduated.

In 1923, the number of students reached 973, more than half of whom were women. In subsequent years, professors and new teachers were attracted to the faculty. In 1931, the faculty was transformed into an independent Central Asian Medical Institute, the first rector of which was G.P. Fedorov. In 1935, it was renamed the Tashkent Medical Institute.

During the war years of 1941–1945, the institute trained more than 2,000 doctors, many of whom were sent to the front. By the 1950s, the institute had 53 departments, hundreds of professors and associate professors, and thousands of scientific works had been published.

In the 1960s–70s, the material and technical base of the institute expanded, new buildings, laboratories, and student dormitories were built. In 1972, the Institute of Pediatrics was separated. During these years, the institute gained international prestige, and foreign students also studied.

In the 1970s and 1980s, the number of students exceeded 10,000, and the number of professors and teachers exceeded 1,000. The institute published more than 17,000 articles and hundreds of monographs in scientific areas.

In 1990, the institute was divided into two - the First and Second Tashkent Medical Institutes. In 2005, they were again united, and the Tashkent Medical Academy was established. In 2014, the Faculty of Dentistry became a separate institute, and in 2018, the Termez branch of the academy was opened. 

Tashkent State Medical University was established on the basis of the Tashkent Medical Academy, the Tashkent Pediatric Medical Institute, and the Tashkent State Dental Institute by the Resolution of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan No. PQ-149 dated April 22, 2025 "On measures to radically improve the system of personnel training in the medical field."

Currently, the university is implementing 4 international projects and 5 joint educational programs. The university is ranked in the 601–800 group of places in the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings. Also, an average of 200 students and 400 professors, researchers and students participate in inbound and outbound academic exchange programs each year.

Students’ knowledge in science is one of the main factors in the development of our independent country and its competitiveness. Work with gifted students at the Academy is based on the order of the Ministry of Higher and Secondary Special Education of the Republic of Uzbekistan on measures to further improve the work of gifted students in accordance with the requirements of the Law of the Republic of Uzbekistan “On Education” and the National Program of Personnel Training, On Measures for Further Expansion of the Participation of the Economy and Branches in Increasing the Quality of Training of Specialists “PQ -3151-s in pursuance of the Resolution of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan “On measures to further reform the system of medical education in the Republic of Uzbekistan” dated May 20, 2017, № 2909 “On measures for further development of the higher education system” A number of activities are being carried out in the TTA, the department of talented students and clubs.

To carry out these works, get familiarized with the orders of the Ministry of Higher and Secondary Special Education of the Republic of Uzbekistan No. 449 of August 11, 2017 and Order No 527 of August 1, 2017, on the content and essence of the orders, as well as implementation of appropriate measures and discussed specific issues facing the team. On the implementation of the Law of the Republic of Uzbekistan “On the state youth policy” adopted on September 14, 2016, the training of talented students on a specific targeted program and the training of skilled and patriotic intellectuals is an urgent problem of education.

Turgunpulat Abidovich Daminov

Turgunpulat Abidovich Daminov Born in Tashkent on April 26, 1941. He graduated from the Tashkent State Medical Institute in 1964. In 1969, he defended his PhD dissertation on "On the Clinical Course of Typhoid-Paratyphoid Diseases in Children Combined with Tuberculosis." In 1986, he defended his doctoral dissertation on "Clinical and Immunological Features of Acute and Protracted Viral Hepatitis A and B in Children." In 1995, he was elected a Corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan. In 1999, he was elected to the second convocation of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan. In 2000, he was elected a full member of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan. T. A. Daminov began his career in 1969 as an assistant at the Tashkent State Medical Institute. At this institution, he worked as an associate professor and head of the department. He subsequently continued his fruitful career as director of the Research Institute of Pediatrics, rector of the First Tashkent State Medical Institute, head of the Department of Infectious Diseases and Pediatrics at the Tashkent Medical Academy, and professor of the same department. Turgunpulat Abidovich made a significant contribution to the development of healthcare in our country, the study of current issues in medical sciences, and the training of highly qualified scientific and pedagogical personnel. Academician T. A. Daminov is the author of more than 500 scientific articles, 6 textbooks, 14 monographs, and more than 45 methodological recommendations and manuals on theoretical and practical issues of medicine. In particular, he created his own scientific school to develop and enrich such important areas of medicine as pediatrics and infectious diseases. Under his direct supervision, 21 doctoral and 43 candidate dissertations were prepared. He is the father of Botir Turgunpulatovich Daminov, Rector of the Tashkent Pediatric Medical Institute and Director of the Republican Specialized Scientific and Practical Medical Center for Nephrology and Kidney Transplantation of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Uzbekistan. Shavkat Ibragimovich Karimov

Born on June 21, 1943, in Tashkent. He graduated from the Tashkent State Medical Institute in 1966 and worked as a surgeon until 1969, serving as head of the surgical department at the Glavgolodnostepstroy Medical and Sanitary Unit (Yangiyer). Since 1969, his professional career has been linked to the Tashkent Medical Institute, where he worked under the supervision of Academician of the Republic of Uzbekistan U. A. Aripov until 1974, successively as an intern, researcher, assistant, and associate professor in the Department of Faculty Surgery. In addition to working in specialized departments during this period, Shavkat Karimov was passionate about clinical transplantology, participating in cadaveric and living donor kidney transplants. The result of his research was his PhD dissertation, "Immunosuppressant Therapy with Donkey Antilymphocyte Globulin and Gossypol-Barbituric Acid in Kidney Allotransplantation," which he defended in 1971. From 1974 to 1977, Shavkat Karimov was on a research trip to the Vascular Surgery Department of the Bakulev Institute of Cardiovascular Surgery, where, under the supervision of Academician A.V. Pokrovsky, he completed his doctoral dissertation, "Diagnosis and Surgical Treatment of Abdominal Aortic Occlusions," which he successfully defended in 1981. From 1977 to 1979, he served as Deputy Director of the Cardiology Research Institute of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Uzbekistan, when coronary angiography was first introduced in the Republic. In 1979, Shavkat Karimov established the Department of Hospital Surgery at the Tashkent State Medical Institute on the premises of the clinic. Shavkat Karimov founded a school of like-minded individuals, comprised of active, dedicated researchers and highly professional surgeons. He and his students developed priority areas of research in the areas of general peritonitis, vascular and thoracic pathology, and the surgical aspects of diabetes. Their research on obstructive jaundice, portal hypertension complicated by profuse bleeding, and reconstructive surgeries on extracranial vessels in chronic cerebrovascular insufficiency received worldwide recognition. From 1991 to 1998, he served as the Minister of Health of the Republic. From 2004 to 2005, he served as the Rector of the Second Tashkent State Medical Institute. From 2005 to 2016, he served as Rector of the Tashkent Medical Academy. From 2016 to the present, he has served as Director of the Republican Specialized Center for Surgical Angioneurology. Professor Shavkat Ibragimovich Karimov is the author of over 600 scientific papers, 29 monographs, 10 textbooks, and 30 methodological recommendations. Over 30 scientific conferences of various levels have been held under his leadership. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the journal "Bulletin of the Tashkent Medical Academy" and a member of the editorial boards of the journals "Surgery," "Angiology and Vascular Surgery," "Annals of Surgical Hepatology," "Medical Journal of Uzbekistan," "Surgery of Uzbekistan," and "Bulletin of Emergency Medical Care."

Yolkin Kholmatovich Turakulov

Yalkin Khalmatovich Turakulov (November 10, 1917 – March 1, 2005) was a prominent Soviet and Uzbek biochemist, academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Uzbek SSR, and Lenin Prize laureate (1964). He made significant contributions to the development of endocrinology, biochemistry, and nuclear medicine in Uzbekistan. Brief Biography: Early Life and Education: Born in the village of Merke (Turkestan Region). Educated at the renowned Karl Liebknecht Commune School near Tashkent. At the age of 14, he entered the Central Asian Medical Institute (SAMI), which he successfully graduated from in 1936. Beginning of Career: At the age of just 22 (in 1939), he became the first director of the newly established Pharmaceutical Medical Institute (PharMI). On the eve of the war, on June 23, 1941, he defended his candidate's dissertation. Participation in the Great Patriotic War: He voluntarily went to the front, refusing a command position in the rear. He served as a military doctor on the Western and Volkhov Fronts and was wounded. For his exemplary organization of medical services and the rescue of the wounded, he was awarded the Order of the Red Star and the Orders of the Patriotic War, 1st and 2nd Classes. Scientific and organizational activities: Yalkin Turakulov was at the forefront of the creation and development of many of Uzbekistan's largest scientific and educational institutions. Over the years, he held leadership positions (rector, director, or deputy director) at the following institutions: Tashkent Medical Institute (1947–1950) Andijan Medical Institute (1955–1957) Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan (1957–1963) Institute of Regional Medicine (1957–1963, 1976–2000) Institute of Biochemistry of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan (1967–1970) Samarkand Medical Institute (1970–1972) Recognition and Awards: In 1964, he was awarded the prestigious Lenin Prize for his research in thyroid biochemistry. In independent Uzbekistan, he was awarded the prestigious state orders "For Outstanding Service" ("Buyuk xizmatlari uchun") and "Respected by the People and the Motherland" ("El-yurt hurmati"). He died in 2005 in Tashkent.
