The “Architectural Monuments” Department is one of the oldest and most prestigious departments within the Architecture and Construction University. It was originally established in 1929 as the “Department of the History and Theory of Architecture” under the Central Asian Cotton-Industrial Polytechnic Institute. This department was led by distinguished scholars in the field of architecture such as V.A. Nilsen, M.A. Salokhiddinov, Kh.Sh. Polatov, T.F. Qodirova, Sh.S. Reyimbaev, D.A. Nozilov, T.Sh. Mamatmusaev, and I.K. Shoisoev.

Since 2021, the talented scholar I.K. Shoisoev has been heading the department. The department boasts skilled educators and dedicated scholars, including Professor O.M. Salimov, Sh.Z. Nurmukhamedova, Professor T.Sh. Mamatmusaev, Professor Kh.Sh. Polatov, PhD Associate Professor S.M. Mirdavidova, PhD Associate Professor A.A. Yakhyaev, PhD Associate Professor O.A. Masharipov, PhD Associate Professor Sh.Sh. Mustafayev, PhD E.A. Salaev, Associate Professor A.A. Turdiev, Senior Lecturers N.B. Rakhmatova, S.G'. Juraeva, B.A. Qalandarov, R.Kh. Kurbanov, and Assistant S.Kh. Ashurov, who are actively engaged in scientific and pedagogical work.

Renowned scholars who once worked at this department—academician G.M. Pugachenkova, Professors V.A. Nilsen, P. Zokhidov, T.F. Qodirova, D.A. Nozilov, Sh.D. Askarov, and I. Azimov—have made significant contributions to the development of Uzbek architectural science. Today, thousands of skilled architects who studied under the guidance of scholars like Professor O.M. Salimov, Professor Sh.Z. Nurmukhamedova, Professor Kh.Sh. Polatov, Professor A.A. Ziyaev, Professor T.Sh. Mamatmusaev, and Professor Sh.S. Reyimbaev continue to pursue creative endeavors to further advance Uzbekistan’s national architectural heritage. These individuals have authored projects for the construction of hundreds of modern and beautiful buildings, as well as the restoration and historical research of architectural monuments erected during the years of independence.

Alongside other departments of the university, this department offers specialized courses such as “History and Theory of Architecture,” “Restoration and Reconstruction of Architectural Monuments,” “Reconstruction of Historical City Centers,” “Modern Use of Architectural Monuments,” “Methods of Organizing Protected Zones of Architectural Monuments,” “Muqarnas and Girih,” “Innovations in Restoration: Foreign Experience,” and more. Over ten qualified professors and instructors conduct both theoretical and practical lessons in these subjects.

Currently, the department offers two undergraduate programs:

60212200 – “Preservation of Cultural Heritage Sites”

60731100 – “Reconstruction and Restoration of Architectural Monuments”

As well as a graduate program in:

70730102 – “Theory and History of Architecture, Restoration of Architectural Monuments”

There is also a 1+1 joint education program with Germany’s Anhalt University in the same graduate specialty, aimed at preparing qualified personnel for the country's development.

In the specialty 18.00.01 – “Theory and History of Architecture, Restoration and Preservation of Architectural Monuments”, the department currently supervises 21 doctoral students (PhD), 6 independent researchers (PhD), 2 doctoral candidates (DSc), and 3 independent researchers (DSc), who are conducting research on topics related to the history and theory of architecture and restoration of historical monuments.

The department team actively engages in scientific research related to architectural history and practice. In recent years, they have enriched the field of Uzbek architectural science by publishing over 10 textbooks, more than 15 teaching aids and methodological guides, and around 15 monographs.

The department also collaborates with related research institutions and creative organizations on various architectural projects and scholarly-artistic works. For example, they partnered with the Institute of Art Studies of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan and the Cultural Heritage Agency of Uzbekistan to compile a data collection on Uzbekistan’s architectural monuments and contributed to the creation of a biographical encyclopedia of architects who lived and worked in Uzbekistan. Senior architects such as O.M. Salimov, Sh.Z. Nurmukhamedova, T.Sh. Mamatmusaev, Kh.Sh. Polatov, A.A. Ziyaev, Sh.S. Reyimbaev, and I.K. Shoisoev actively participated in these scientific and creative projects.

Additionally, the department's faculty take the initiative in organizing scientific and practical conferences dedicated to the theory and history of architecture. Notably, they have led the organization of the international scientific-practical conference “Architecture: Heritage and Modernity”, and the national conference “Problems in the Theory, History, Restoration and Reconstruction of Architecture in Uzbekistan.”
