Palace of Khudayar Khan

The Palace of Khudayar Khan is one of the largest historical and architectural monuments of Central Asia of the 19th century. It was built in 1863-1873 by the last Kokand khan, Khudayar Khan. The palace covers an area of about 4 hectares. This historical monument originally consisted of 3 parts and 114 rooms. Today only 19 rooms remain. In 1918, most of the palace was destroyed as a result of a Bolshevik attack aimed at overthrowing the Turkestan autonomy.
On the gates of the palace the words “Arki Oli Said Muhammad Khudoyarkhan” are written in large letters in Arabic script. Several thousand people took part in its construction. In addition to the locals, the most experienced craftsmen (80 people) from Bukhara were brought in to supervise the construction. For example, Mir Ubaidulla was an architect, masters Soli Khoja, Mulla Suyarkul, Fazilhoja built walls and domes, master Sufi Yuldash was a carver, and master Fazilhoja was an artist.
In addition to the blue color used in the classical architecture of Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva, yellow, red and blue colors were also used during the construction of the palace. The facade of the palace, facing east, looks especially beautiful in the light of the sun, and its shiny tiles shimmer with colors.
