Uzbekistan State University of Physical Education and Sports

The Uzbekistan State University of Physical Education and Sport is the only core higher education institution in the country that trains highly qualified specialist coaches in the field of sport. Due to the growing need for physical education and the necessity of training physical education personnel from among the local population, a physical education technical school was established in Tashkent in 1935.

However, during that period, highly qualified specialists were mainly trained in cities such as Moscow and Leningrad, and talented young people were compelled to travel to those cities to pursue their studies. In 1949, faculties for training physical education teachers with higher education were established at the Tashkent State Pedagogical Institute named after Nizami, and in 1951 at the Fergana State Pedagogical Institute. Nevertheless, as young men and women increasingly began to engage regularly in sports and health-improving physical activities, the demand for specialists grew even stronger. By 1955, only 247 specialists with higher education in physical education were employed across republican higher educational institutions, schools, and sports organizations. Therefore, it became urgently necessary to address the problem of training highly qualified sports coaches, sports referees, specialists in physical education and industrial physical training, teachers for educational institutions, athlete-instructors, and scientific staff. The most serious challenge was the shortage of local personnel amid the mass expansion of the physical education movement, as well as the weak development of physical education in rural areas. Consequently, in order to improve the physical education movement, to educate a qualitatively new generation of specialists, and to ensure the active participation of representatives of the local population in sports competitions, the Uzbekistan State Institute of Physical Education was established on August 13, 1955, in accordance with Resolution No. 5972 of the former Union government and Resolution No. 653 of the Council of Ministers of the Uzbek SSR dated October 27. The year 2018 marked a period of profound transformation and renewal in the history of the university. A new chapter was opened with the Decree of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan dated March 5, 2018, No. PF-5368, “On Measures to Fundamentally Improve the System of State Governance in the Field of Physical Education and Sport,” pursuant to which the Uzbekistan State University of Physical Education and Sport was established on the basis of the Institute of Physical Education and Sport. The Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan dated May 3, 2018, No. 331, “On Measures to Organize the Activities of the Uzbekistan State University of Physical Education and Sport,” opened the door to new opportunities.

The university offers three bachelor’s degree programs and four master’s degree specializations. Currently, educational and training activities are organized across 23 departments, within which lectures, practical classes, laboratory work, and seminars are conducted for bachelor’s and master’s students. Each department is equipped with curricula and methodological materials corresponding to its field of specialization and carries out systematic work aimed at the effective development of students’ theoretical knowledge and practical skills. At the same time, the educational process is organized efficiently and with high quality through the use of interactive methods, modern technologies, and laboratory equipment. Student activities are centrally managed by the Registrar’s Office, ensuring an orderly and effective academic process. At present, the university operates one branch campus.

• Associate Professors without an academic degree – 54 (including 15 women; average age: 44)

The total number of staff with academic degrees and titles is 213, with an average age of 45.
The university’s scientific capacity is 52.1%.

The Uzbekistan State University of Physical Education and Sport has unlimited access to international scientific databases, including Web of Science, EBSCO, UzNel, Diss.natlib.uz, ibs.natlib.uz, and Press.natlib.uz. The Information Resource Center includes three reading halls with a total seating capacity of 130: a student reading hall with 54 seats, a faculty reading hall with 16 seats, and a student reading hall located in the Palace of Culture with 60 seats.

Main Tasks and Areas of Activity

• Training highly qualified specialists in relevant fields and specializations, taking into account international standards and advanced practices in physical education and sport, and enhancing the university’s scientific and pedagogical potential;

• Introducing modern methods of organizing the educational process and widely involving internationally qualified athletes and coaches with high professional pedagogical skills and practical experience to create broad opportunities for high-quality higher education for young people;

• Further optimizing theoretical and practical training with an emphasis on students’ independent study, applying curricula, programs, and teaching materials aimed at developing professional competence in line with employer needs and requirements for high sports performance;

• Regularly updating the collection of educational, scientific, and other literature, including foreign publications, and educational resources related to sport; developing innovative teaching methods; widely using information and communication technologies in the educational process; expanding access for students, faculty, and young researchers to international information and educational resources related to sports activities; and improving internship and practical training procedures;

• Systematically enhancing the qualifications and organizing internships for pedagogical and scientific staff, supporting research activities addressing sports-related issues, widely involving foreign specialists in the educational process, and strengthening cooperation with leading foreign higher education institutions, analytical and research centers, and international organizations to ensure academic mobility for doctoral candidates, PhD students, and students;

• Increasing the university’s international ranking and competitiveness by expanding educational opportunities for foreign citizens, applying positive international experience in sports education, and ensuring the close integration of theoretical and practical knowledge with applications in sports management and coaching through active cooperation with sports organizations, specialized sports educational institutions, sports federations (associations), and governing bodies in the field of physical education and sport;

• Expanding the attraction of extra-budgetary funds by introducing additional paid services (leasing, paid training courses) within the capacity of the university’s material and technical base, selecting talented youth (talent identification), and establishing student sports clubs and teams in Olympic and national sports for participation in national and international competitions.

Department Activities: The Department of Strategic Development, International Relations and Ratings Work is a structural subdivision of the Uzbek State University of Physical Culture and Sports. The Department coordinates the activities of the university and its structural subdivisions, faculty, and staff with organizations that publish international ratings. In carrying out its activities, the Department interacts with all structural subdivisions, departments of the university, as well as with foreign higher educational institutions, organizations, and centers.

WORK CARRIED OUT BY THE DEPARTMENT IN 2024-2025

In the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings for 2024-2025, the university retained its "reporter" status. Regular contacts have been established with the rating organization, and accurate information on the university's scientific and educational indicators has been provided.

A university profile has been created for the international UI Green Metric ranking, and information on environmental sustainability indicators is regularly provided.

Cooperation with the QS World University Rankings was established, and the share of international students and faculty, scientific citation indicators, and research effectiveness of the university were monitored.

Scientific seminars and round tables were held with professors and specialists from Turkey, Germany, Russia, and China.

Professor Ramazan Savranbasi of Istanbul Aydin University was awarded the title of "Honorary Professor" of UzSUPCS

Based on an agreement with the Turkish organization TICA, a Turkish language teaching and training center operates at the university.

An investment agreement for the creation of scientific laboratories for the next year is being implemented.

A trilateral memorandum has been signed with the Silk Road Innovation and Development Institute (China), according to which a Chinese language center will be established at the university, and programs for attracting foreign students are being developed.

Agreements have been reached with the Shanghai Youth Sports Federation on youth exchange in table tennis, the organization of training camps, and the "Uzbekistan-China Friendship Cup" tournament.

A program of training camps, student exchanges, and joint scientific research in wrestling has been developed with the Australian organization "Sport Nomads."

A memorandum of cooperation has been signed with Rodney Holt, the president of the Asian Wheelchair Rugby Federation, and a proposal to hold the Asian Championship at UzSUPCS has been accepted.

A database on the university's scientific, educational, international cooperation, and infrastructure indicators has been created and is regularly updated.

Quarterly reports are prepared for international rating organizations and submitted to the university management with proposals.

A system for monitoring the contribution to the rating by department has been implemented.

The university's international website has been updated, and English content has been enriched.

Representatives of the university actively participate in international conferences, forums, and sports events.

The Uzbek State University of Physical Education and Sports (UzSUPES) offers specialized language courses for students, faculty, and external learners. English is taught at the university in two tracks:

General English:

Levels from Beginner to Upper-Intermediate, with an emphasis on grammar, speaking, and listening skills.

A dedicated program covering international sports terminology, competition rules, refereeing, and communication with international sports organizations.

IELTS Preparation:

Preparatory groups are available for university graduates and master's degree applicants seeking international certification.

2. Russian Language Courses

Since instruction in many programs is also conducted in Russian (and a joint Uzbek-Belarusian faculty exists), demand for Russian language courses is high.

Conversational Russian:

For those wishing to communicate freely in everyday and academic settings.

Academic and Professional Russian:

Aimed at improving the ability to independently work with literature on sports methodology, biomedical disciplines, and sports psychology.

3. Turkish Language Courses (Türkçe)

Established due to the growing international cooperation with Turkey in sports and education. The Turkish language course is taught by Turkish specialist Hasan Kaya, based on the national and TÖMER system (international Turkish language standard), starting from A1 level. An excellent opportunity for young people wishing to participate in student exchange programs with Turkish universities.

4. Korean Language Courses (한국어)

Korean language courses have been established due to the growing cooperation with South Korea in the fields of sports and education, as well as the increasing interest in Korean culture and the K-sport direction.

Basic Korean (한국어 기초): Levels from Beginner to Intermediate, starting with learning the Hangul alphabet. Emphasis is placed on grammar, speaking, and listening skills.

Specialized Korean: A dedicated program covering Korean sports terminology, competition rules, and communication with Korean sports organizations and federations.

TOPIK Preparation: Special preparation groups are available for those wishing to enter South Korean universities and obtain the international TOPIK (Test of Proficiency in Korean) certificate. This is an excellent opportunity for young people who want to participate in student exchange programs with Korean universities.
